Grateful for GRIT Games!

Connecting the Dots Through G.R.I.T.: Building Stronger Classrooms One Student at a Time

The 2026 Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics (FCTM) Annual Conference was one for the books! I had the incredible privilege of presenting my session, "Connecting the Dots Through G.R.I.T.," to a room filled with passionate educators who are committed to helping students succeed both academically and personally.

I am incredibly grateful for every teacher, coach, administrator, and district leader who attended. The room was packed, the conversations were meaningful, and the energy was contagious. Throughout the session, educators actively participated, asked thoughtful questions, and collaborated on ways to implement the G.R.I.T. Framework throughout the entire school year.

More Than Mathematics—It's About Developing Students

One of the biggest takeaways from our session was that while academic standards are important, lasting success comes from intentionally developing students' character. My G.R.I.T. Framework focuses on four essential pillars:

Growth Mindset – Helping students believe they can grow through effort and perseverance.

Resilience – Teaching students how to bounce back from setbacks and view mistakes as opportunities to learn.

Self-Efficacy – Building confidence so students believe they can accomplish challenging goals.

Time Management – Equipping students with organizational and goal-setting skills that prepare them for lifelong success.

When these four components become part of everyday classroom instruction, we begin to see students take greater ownership of their learning while building confidence that extends beyond the classroom.

Classroom Management Begins with Relationships

One of the most engaging discussions during the session centered around a simple but powerful truth:

Students don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Many teachers shared common classroom challenges—from student disengagement to behavior concerns—and we explored how relationship-building is one of the most effective classroom management strategies available.

Rather than relying solely on consequences, we discussed creating classrooms where students feel known, valued, encouraged, and challenged. Positive relationships naturally lead to increased engagement, improved behavior, stronger communication, and greater academic success.

G.R.I.T. Games: Learning Through Connection

One of the highlights of the session was introducing educators to my G.R.I.T. Games.

These interactive activities are designed to intentionally build classroom community while reinforcing the habits of successful learners. Teachers loved seeing how games can become purposeful learning experiences rather than simply "brain breaks."

Some of the ways we discussed using G.R.I.T. Games include:

  • Icebreakers that help students build trust and form meaningful connections.
  • Team-building challenges that strengthen communication and collaboration.
  • Reflection games that encourage students to think about perseverance and personal growth.
  • Problem-solving activities that require resilience when faced with challenges.
  • Goal-setting games that help students develop ownership of their academic progress.
  • Celebration activities that recognize effort, improvement, and positive character—not just grades.

When students laugh together, solve problems together, encourage one another, and celebrate success together, they begin to develop a classroom culture built on respect and belonging.

Teachers shared exciting ideas for incorporating G.R.I.T. Games during:

  • Morning meetings
  • Bell ringers
  • Math warm-ups
  • Advisory periods
  • Classroom celebrations
  • Intervention blocks
  • Professional Learning Communities
  • School-wide character education initiatives
  • The possibilities truly are endless.

G.R.I.T. Is Not a Program—It's a Culture

Perhaps the most exciting part of the session was watching educators realize that G.R.I.T. is not another initiative to add to their already full plates.

Instead, it is a mindset that naturally integrates into everything they already do.

Whether teaching mathematics, reading, science, social studies, electives, or career and technical education, every teacher has opportunities each day to cultivate resilience, confidence, perseverance, and responsibility.

When schools intentionally create a culture of G.R.I.T., students become more engaged, teachers experience fewer behavioral disruptions, and learning becomes both meaningful and joyful.

Thank You, FCTM!
